This tour focuses on Philadelphia’s early history and the vital role of Black Americans in the nation’s foundation. It begins at Congo Square, where unmarked graves of free and enslaved yellow fever victims are located. Learn about the Quaker school that educated Black and White students together and discover the site where the Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1793. Hear the story of Martha Washington’s enslaved handmaiden who emancipated herself and others who traveled along the Underground Railroad.
Visit the Old London Coffee House, a site where enslaved people were inspected and sold. Walk alongside history as you learn about prominent early African Americans and meet the figures of enslaved people, abolitionists, slaveholders, and founding fathers.
The tour also includes visits to key historic sites such as Independence Hall, The President’s House, Congress Hall, Old City Hall, the First U.S. Supreme Court Building, the American Philosophical Society Museum, Library Hall, Thomas Jefferson Garden, the First and Second Bank of the U.S., Carpenter's Hall, New Hall Military Museum, Independence Square, Washington Square, the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier, the Bicentennial Moon Tree, John Todd House, Bishop White House, Kidd House, Dock Creek, 18th Century Gardens, the Merchant's Exchange, and the U.S. Customs House.
